The Five Pillars
Fasting during Ramadan (Sawm) is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, making it obligatory for all adult Muslims who are physically able. The fast begins at Fajr (dawn) and ends at Maghrib (sunset).
Laylat al-Qadr
The Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr) falls within the last ten nights of Ramadan. This night is considered more blessed than a thousand months, and it commemorates when the Quran was first revealed.
Iftar & Suhoor
Muslims break their fast at sunset with a meal called Iftar, traditionally starting with dates and water. Before dawn, they eat Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal that sustains them through the day.
Taraweeh Prayers
Special nightly prayers called Taraweeh are performed during Ramadan. Many mosques complete the recitation of the entire Quran during these prayers throughout the month.
